The Workings of Sankhara / 10-day course vs. daily practice? /Focus on creating the right causes

*️⃣ Q1: I try to maintain positive thinking, but I often slip into negativity. I also struggle with meditation and find myself impatient in the mornings — whether it’s getting started with work or reaching for my iPad.

✅ A1: This is normal. It is the work of Sankhara.

All day long, our buried Sankhara works continuously — non-stop, every moment, never resting (even when we are asleep).

Some are bad, some are good, and most are neutral.

📍When it is bad, we will feel down or agitated, depending on which type of “bad” Sankhara.

📍When it is good, we will feel joyful or peaceful, depending on which type of “good” Sankhara.

📍When it is neutral, we just live on automatically without awareness, and we will be in a normal mood — but with no wisdom.

That is why people’s moods swing all day long. Our mood swings among these three types of Sankhara.

Only when we are mindful does our mood stop swinging. Sankhara cannot overpower mindfulness or awareness.

To understand our mind thoroughly, we need to know clearly what Sankhara is.

Let me explain Sankhara in different ways for you.

Please read through how Sankhara works so you know what happens inside your mind.

This understanding will help you — at least to start thinking correctly, even when you are overwhelmed by it emotionally.

Sankhara refers to the way your mind “constructs” or “shapes” your reality based on your thoughts, memories, and intentions.

The word “Sankhara” means:
Mental Formations, Conditioning, Volitional Activities, Mental Proliferation.

Brief explanation:
▪️Mental Formations:
The “shapes” or “patterns” your thoughts take.
▪️Conditioning:
How your past experiences “program” you to react in certain ways.
▪️The Fabricator:
Something that builds or creates a story in your head.
“Sankhara is the process where your mind processes information and adds flavor to it.”

For example, if you see a dog:

🌿Pure Vision (no thought added): You just see a four-legged animal.

🌿Sankhara (The Processing Mind):
Your mind remembers a past dog experience:
+ the bite experience, then adds “fear”;
+ the loud barking, then adds “annoyance”;
+ your beloved pet at home, then adds “compassion.”

🌿Result: You react according to what you added onto your original pure vision. You start to hate or love that dog.

Simple concept:
Think of your mind like a chef.

▪️Ingredients: Your feelings, memories, and habits.
▪️The Cooking: This is Sankhara. Your mind mixes everything together to create an “emotion” or a “reaction.”
▪️The Result: You feel happy, angry, or stressed.

Vipassana is the mindfulness practice that stops “the cooking mind” at each moment when your mind is aware of, or focused entirely on, one of two neutral objects within ourselves.

One object is physical; another is mental.

☘️The physical object, for example, is when you are aware of your breath or your body sensations.

☘️The mental object, for example, is when you are aware that something is happening in your mind — e.g., anger, sadness, disappointment, happiness, etc.

But since Sankhara works inside our mind when we receive “contacts” (through our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind).

Sankhara will start the “cooking process” on what we see, what we hear, what we smell, what we taste, what we feel in the body, and what we think in our mind.

We therefore always end up reacting because of this “cooking process.”

Since all these “contacts” or “stimulants” happen to us all the time, we automatically act or react to them all the time as well.

(When we think about it deeply, we can see that humans are just like a mentally ill person who sometimes laughs, sometimes cries, and sometimes acts in ignorance.)

But meditators differ from untrained humans. Meditators have the mental tools to alleviate this swinging situation.

As we become more experienced meditators, we can control and mitigate “the cooking process” better and better.

Some skilled meditators can see the cooking process in their mind from the root before it even begins. Let alone allowing it to overpower them.

*️⃣ Q2: I was wondering whether the 10-day course would help, or whether I simply need to commit to a disciplined daily meditation practice.

✅ A2: You need both.

The ten-day course gives you the deepest strength due to the long hours of practice. This extended practice implants an autonomous mindfulness ability into our mind.

The morning and nightly daily practice helps you accumulate moments of awareness each day.

*️⃣ Q3: So I am not sure if the 10 days gets the results. Only last 2 weeks unless I practice every day.

✅ A3: It usually lasts about that long—roughly one to two weeks.
Then, we get bogged down with life’s responsibilities. That is why daily practice, both morning and night, is crucial.

However, what also really helps is maintaining awareness during the day. You can simply stay quiet and step away from your thoughts for a few seconds, observing your state of mind or your breath.

You can do this even when you are around people, talking, or listening. It helps immensely if you can take these "few seconds of internal awareness" many times throughout the day.

Utilize any moment you are alone. If you start to become agitated with those around you and know that confronting them will only bring out the worst in you, pause everything.

Leave the scene momentarily.
If no other space is available, you can even use a bathroom stall. Keep this moment private; allow your mind to be quiet and calm, away from external stimulants.

Do this for a few minutes to gather your senses.

Alternatively, you could sit relaxedly with your eyes closed, focusing your attention on your breath for a couple of minutes—or even five, if you can.

You will gain enough awareness to deal with issues more wisely and with less emotion. When doing this, do not rush to get rid of emotions right away.

Do not expect a miracle, or even expect it to "work."
Don’t focus on a specific outcome; instead, focus on creating the right causes, and the result will follow naturally.

All you have to do is observe calmly without thought. Then, you will be better equipped to face the matter at hand.
